Recent diagnosis, not responding to treatment

Hi everyone,

My 8 year westie, named luc, was diagnosed with CIL about 8 weeks ago. He has not been responding well to treatment (prednisone,low fat diet). We've recently switched up his meds and added methophenalate mofetil, but he's taken a turn for the worse. My vet just told me she is concerned that he is showing signs that he is one of the untreatable dogs. My heart broke when she said that. I'm going to keep trying and we're trying daily steroid injections. I can't get him to eat, he's very finicky. It's absolute torture seeing him waste away and be so sick, but I have to keep trying to fix him. Thank you to everyone on this thread for giving me hope. I'm so grateful this forum exists and that we have a place to support one another.

Welcome to the forum. There is a lot of good information and advice on this forum, and it has been very helpful to me and my little dog, Diva. My dog also was not responding to her diet, so I had to play around to find the right combination. She did not do well on Science Diet. I discovered later that it is full of soy. Right now she is on 1/2 cup of rice, 1 TBSP Royal Canin low-fat gastro-intestinal soft food, 1/2 tsp. nonfat cottage cheese, 1/4 tsp. nonfat milk powder, 2 tsp. non fat tuna, vitamins, minerals, acidophilous and digestive enzymes. She gets 7 mg. of Prednisone once a day. Giving it once a day rather than twice a day really helped. She also gets Flagyl, Pepcid AC and a weekly B-12 shot. All of this has been very helpful. The most important thing is that she gets Mirtazipine to stimulate appetite once every 3 days. Wishing all the best to your Luc!
